At 4101 m Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Borneo and the highest between the Himalayas and Iran Jaya. Park Headquarter is already high enough to be pleasantly cool and typical montane forest grows around; well-marked trails lead through the forest here. The Mountain Garden contains a variety of interesting plants, including montane orchids and pitcher plants. The main trail to the summit leads first to the LABAN RATA resthouse, set among stunted bushes at 3260 m; Higher up we soon come to bare granite rock, with hardy plants clawing at cracks. The early morning temperature here can go down to freezing! From the summit, there are good views over the city of Kota Kinabalu and northern Borneo. We will scurry back to the valley before the clouds come in and the afternoon storms begin.
